Filament storage boxes: what actually keeps your filament dry
A practical guide to choosing a filament storage box: why moisture degrades filament, what features to look for, how DIY compares to ready-made, and when you need a dryer rather than just a box.
Why filament absorbs moisture
Most printing problems that get blamed on the printer are actually the filament. PLA, PETG, Nylon, and TPU are all hygroscopic — they pull moisture from the air. Leave a reel on the printer for a week or two and it can absorb enough water to cause real problems at the hot end. When that damp filament hits the melt zone, the water turns to steam. You get bubbling, cracking sounds, rough surfaces, and prints that snap when you flex them.
Nylon is the worst offender. It can be noticeably degraded after a single day in humid air. PLA is more forgiving but still starts showing surface roughness after a few weeks open to the air. PETG sits somewhere in the middle. The damp UK climate does not help — a workshop or spare room with central heating cycling on and off is often more humid than you would expect.
How to tell if your filament is wet
The clearest sign is an audible crackle or hiss as the filament feeds through. On a clean extrusion you should hear almost nothing. If you hear popping or snapping, the moisture is flashing to steam in the melt zone.
Other signs to watch for:
- Rough or foamy surface texture on prints that used to come out smooth
- More stringing than usual, even with settings you know work
- A brittle first layer that snaps when you peel the print off the plate
- The filament itself snapping on the reel or as it feeds
If you are seeing any of these, dry the reel before changing any slicer settings. Most mystery print quality problems are wet filament in disguise.
What a storage box actually does
A storage box has one job: keep the air inside dry and stop humid air getting back in. A good one gives you an airtight seal, space for desiccant, and — ideally — a way to feed filament out while printing without opening the lid. That last part matters more than people expect. If you have to open the box for every print, you lose most of the benefit within a few sessions.
Most dedicated filament storage boxes have an internal spool holder, a PTFE port for the filament to exit, and a rubber or silicone seal around the lid. Some include a built-in hygrometer — a small humidity gauge visible through the lid — so you can check the internal humidity without opening. That is worth having. It tells you when the desiccant is spent without any guesswork.
What to look for
Airtight seal. This is the most important thing. Press the lid closed and try to lift it — a good box should resist slightly, the way a clip-lock food container does. Cheap boxes with thin flexi lids let air in continuously and are barely better than nothing.
Desiccant. Silica gel beads work well and last a long time. A box with a dedicated tray is tidier, but loose sachets do the same job. Colour-indicating silica gel — orange or blue depending on the type — shows when it has saturated and needs recharging. You can regenerate it by spreading it on a baking tray and drying it in an oven at 120 °C for around an hour.
Built-in hygrometer. Not essential, but genuinely useful. Aim to keep internal humidity below about 15% RH for PLA and PETG. Nylon and TPU benefit from lower — under 10% RH if you can manage it.
Filament exit port. If you plan to print directly from the box, check the port fits your PTFE tube. Most use 4 mm outer diameter tubing, but not all boxes are consistent — check before you order.
Spool compatibility. Standard 1 kg reels fit most boxes without trouble. If you use 2 kg jumbo reels or reels from less common brands, check the internal diameter of the spool holder before buying.
Ready-made boxes vs DIY
The most popular ready-made options are the eSUN eBox, the Sunlu S1 (which doubles as an active dryer), and various sealed tubs from Chinese manufacturers sold under several brand names. The sealed tubs are cheap and work well for passive storage. Dryer-box combos cost more but let you dry and print from the same unit at the same time.
DIY works perfectly well. A large clip-lock food container — the type sold for cereals or pasta — with a few silica gel packs inside and a 4 mm hole drilled for a PTFE tube performs as well as most mid-range products. The seal is what matters. Add a small stick-on hygrometer inside so you can read the humidity at a glance without opening the lid.
Vacuum-sealed bags are a good option for long-term storage of reels you are not actively using. They pack flat and keep reels stable for months, but they are not practical for printing from directly.
Storage box vs filament dryer
A storage box keeps dry filament dry. A dryer rescues filament that has already absorbed moisture. They are solving different problems, though some products do both.
If your filament is already wet, a storage box alone will not fix it. You need to dry it first:
1. A dedicated filament dryer such as the Sunlu S1 Plus or Bambu's own unit — convenient and consistent, worth buying if you print regularly. 2. A food dehydrator set to the right temperature — typically 45–50 °C for PLA, 55–65 °C for PETG, 70–80 °C for Nylon. Check the dehydrator reaches a stable temperature before trusting it with filament. 3. A household oven on its lowest setting with the door slightly ajar — works, but needs more care. PLA can soften and warp on the reel above 60 °C, so keep the temperature conservative and check it regularly.
PLA often improves after 4–6 hours of drying. Nylon can need 8–12 hours at temperature. If the material is still crackling after a full drying cycle, it may be degraded beyond recovery — a fresh reel is the faster path at that point.
Once a reel is dry, seal it immediately in a box with fresh desiccant. A freshly dried reel left on the printer overnight in a damp room will absorb moisture again surprisingly quickly.
How many boxes do you need?
One per active reel at minimum. If you regularly swap between colours or materials, having two or three on the shelf saves time. For reels in long-term storage, vacuum bags take up less space and cost less. The boxes earn their keep on reels you are actively printing from and returning to between sessions.
If you print a lot of Nylon, TPU, or other moisture-sensitive materials, a dryer-box combo that keeps the reel at temperature throughout a long print makes a bigger difference than any passive box. For PLA hobbyists who print occasionally, one good sealed box with fresh desiccant is usually enough to keep things consistent between sessions.
Does the brand matter?
Within reason, no. Sealing quality and desiccant capacity matter more than the name on the lid. Branded options like the eSUN eBox have a track record and replacement parts are findable. Unbranded tubs from Amazon or AliExpress work fine if the seal is solid — test the lid before trusting it with filament.
The one thing to avoid is a storage box with vents that cannot be fully closed. Some are designed to exhaust heat during active drying, which also lets humid air back in when used for cold storage. Check that any vent has a proper closed position before you buy.
