How the price is built

4.6p
per gram

Material, weighed from your actual file. PLA is 4.6p; tougher and engineering materials run 5.06p to 20.7p per gram (table below).

£1.15
per machine hour

Print time, estimated from your actual file. A 2-hour clip uses £2.30 of machine time; a 20-hour helmet pays for the machine it occupies.

£6.90
minimum order

Floors: £4.60 per part, £6.90 per order. That covers handling, checking and packing on the smallest jobs. Compare £15 to £40 minimums at the industrial bureaus.

That is the Standard formula. No file-setup fee, no per-item handling fee, no quote fee. Speed tier multiplies the labour: Express (jumps the queue, guaranteed 2-day dispatch even when busy) ×1.7, Standard (2 to 4 working days) ×1, Economy (10 to 14 days) ×0.8. Students take 20% off labour with an academic email.

Draft PLA fit checks start at £5.18. Draft uses 0.28 mm layers, fixed 10% infill and a 15% prototype discount, with a £4.03 per-part floor. It is for economical size, shape and fit checks rather than finished presentation parts.

Fine detail uses 0.16 mm layers. It keeps the Standard material, machine-hour and minimum-price rules, with no fixed quality surcharge. The estimator slices the actual STL, STEP or unsliced 3MF at 0.16 mm and includes the additional estimated machine time automatically. An already-sliced 3MF remains Standard because its embedded layer height cannot be changed.

Eligible print subtotals over £10 save 5% when any suitable stocked colour is acceptable. Minimum-price floors can reduce or remove that saving. Hark Tech is not VAT registered, so VAT is not added to the displayed price.

Material rates

Per-gram rates. Stocked colours vary by material and are shown live in the estimator. TPU has a £11.50 print-order minimum. ABS, ASA, polycarbonate, nylon and PETG-CF have a £46 print-order minimum; PA-CF has a £69 minimum. These floors apply whether the selected colour is stocked or ordered in and before any eligible no-colour-preference saving. UK Tracked 48 delivery is free at that price. The materials guide compares them honestly.

Pricing, answered

How much does 3D printing cost in the UK?

Draft PLA fit checks start at £5.18. Standard pricing is 4.6p per gram of PLA (other materials 5.06p to 20.7p) plus £1.15 per machine hour, with a £4.60 per-part and £6.90 per-order minimum. Palm-sized Standard parts typically land between £6.90 and £15. The estimator shows the exact price for your file before you pay.

How is Fine detail priced?

Fine detail uses 0.16 mm layers and the same material, machine-hour and minimum-price rules as Standard. There is no fixed quality surcharge: the estimator slices the actual model at 0.16 mm and includes the additional estimated machine time automatically. It is available for STL, STEP and unsliced 3MF files. An already-sliced 3MF remains Standard because its embedded layer height cannot be changed.

Are there any hidden fees?

No. No per-item handling fee, no setup fee, no quote fee. Delivery starts at £2.85 and UK Tracked 48 is free over £40. The estimator shows current availability and applies the minimum before you pay.

Why charge machine time as well as weight?

A 20-hour print occupies a machine for 20 hours however little it weighs. Weight-only pricing overcharges small dense parts and undercharges big hollow ones; charging both keeps every quote honest, and the breakdown shows each number.

Do prices drop for multiple copies?

The estimator automatically applies 5% off labour from 5 identical parts, rising to 30% at 100, which is the online limit. Runs of 101 or more need a written business quote. The larger-run framework reaches 40% at 300 or more, subject to settings and capacity review. Students take a further 20% off labour with an academic email, and the Economy speed tier takes another 20% off when you can wait 10 to 14 days.

Is it cheaper than buying my own printer?

For occasional parts, yes: a decent printer is £200 to £500 before filament, failed prints and your evenings. For one part a month, ordering wins. If you print weekly, buy a printer, and our help library will get you running it well.

When was this page last updated, and do these numbers drift?

Updated September 2026. The estimator applies the live pricing, quality, material availability and delivery choices to the actual production file. Upload an STL, STEP/STP or 3MF file for the firm price before checkout; a saved quote is held for seven days. This page explains the rate card, but the current estimator result is authoritative.
