ROG Ally SD card reader repair, £59 fixed

microSD card not detected? Slot drops out after a gaming session? It’s the best-known fault on the original ROG Ally. The usual cause is a small surface-mount protection fuse on the slot’s power feed that fails with heat. We replace it by post for a fixed £59, with tracked UK return included.

Symptoms

Sound like your Ally?

Three ways the original ROG Ally card slot fault usually shows itself.

microSD card not detected

Windows no longer shows the card at all, and trying a different card makes no difference. The slot has stopped working, not the card.

Disappears after gaming

The card works from cold, then drops out once the console has warmed up during a session, and games installed on it stop launching.

Corrupted or unreadable cards

Windows asks to format the card, or games and files on it come up damaged. A failing slot can corrupt a card, so the slot is the part to fix first.

Still inside the ASUS window? ASUS extended the card reader warranty on the original ROG Ally to 24 months, so if yours is still covered, contact ASUS first.

What we can and can’t promise. The protection fuse is the usual cause, not the only one. We confirm the fault before we start. If it turns out to be elsewhere on the board, we photograph it and quote before any extra work. If the card socket itself is damaged, replacing it is £25 extra; the part comes from abroad, so it adds time, and we agree it with you before ordering.

Questions

Common questions

Why does the ROG Ally SD card reader stop working?

On the original ROG Ally (RC71L) the card slot sits in a warm part of the console. The usual cause of a dead slot is a small surface-mount protection fuse on the slot’s 3.3 V power feed that fails with heat. We replace that fuse, which brings most slots back. If the fault turns out to be elsewhere, we photograph it and quote before any extra work.

How much does a ROG Ally card reader repair cost?

£59 fixed for the original ROG Ally, with tracked UK return included. You book with a £15 deposit that is credited to the £59, post the console to us tracked at your own cost, and pay the balance when the work is complete. If the card socket itself is damaged, replacing it is £25 extra, quoted before any work.

My Ally is still fairly new. Should I go to ASUS first?

ASUS extended the card reader warranty on the original ROG Ally to 24 months, so if yours is still inside that window, contact ASUS first. If it is outside that window, we can fix it by post.

Do you repair the ROG Ally X or replace ROG Ally batteries?

Both are quoted on request. The card slot is in a different place on the ROG Ally X, so it is not covered by the £59 fixed price. Send us the model and a short description of the fault on WhatsApp or through the contact page and we’ll quote. The USB-C port is different: replacing it is £75 fixed on both the ROG Ally and the ROG Ally X.

Do you replace the ROG Ally USB-C port?

Yes. USB-C port replacement is £75 fixed for the ROG Ally and the ROG Ally X, with tracked UK return included and a 12-month warranty on the work. You pay £15 to book, credited to the price. If we find lifted pads, broken traces or other damage beyond the port, we photograph it and quote before doing anything more.

Will I lose what is on my microSD card?

The repair is to the console, so keep the card and take it out before posting. A card that has been in a failing slot can come back corrupted or unreadable, and fixing the slot cannot bring back files that are already damaged.

How long does it take?

5 to 7 working days from arrival on the bench. If the socket needs replacing, the part comes from abroad and adds time. We tell you if a part adds time before you approve it.
