No signal on the TV
The console powers up, the light comes on, you can hear it running, but the TV insists there’s nothing connected. The most common HDMI port failure of all.
Black screen
The TV sees something, the screen wakes, then stays black. Often a port with cracked joints making partial contact; on Series consoles it can also be the retimer chip (see below).
“Check your TV input”
The console is clearly on, the fan is spinning, the power light is lit, and the TV still tells you to check the input. A damaged port stops the console and TV shaking hands.
Loose or wobbly port
The cable droops, needs holding at an angle, or the picture flickers when the cable moves. The port’s anchor joints have broken away from the board and it’s only getting worse.
Bent or damaged pins
A cable forced in the wrong way, a fall with the cable attached, or a mangled plug. Bent pins inside the port can short the video lines, and they don’t bend back reliably.
Port pushed into the case
The whole socket has been shoved backwards and sits sunken behind the case opening. The port has been torn off its mounts, and plugging in now risks the board itself.

The honest bit about Series consoles
On the Series X and Series S, the HDMI signal passes through a small chip called a retimer before it reaches the port. Its job is to clean up the high-speed video signal, and when it fails the symptoms look almost identical to a broken port: console on, screen black. A new port can’t fix a dead retimer.
So we don’t guess. The port goes under the microscope first, and physical damage there is obvious: bent pins, cracked joints, torn anchors. That’s the fault in most consoles we see, and the £45 port swap cures it. If the port swap doesn’t bring the picture back, we stop, diagnose the retimer properly and send you a quote through our board-level soldering service before any extra work, with what you’ve already paid credited against it.

Is the Series S the same price as the Series X?

How do you know it’s the port and not the HDMI retimer chip?
The port goes under the microscope first. Bent or broken pins, cracked solder joints, a loose shield or a port sitting crooked in the case all point clearly at the port itself, and that’s what we find in most cases. If the port looks healthy, or a new port doesn’t bring the picture back, the HDMI retimer chip on Series consoles becomes the suspect. At that point we stop, diagnose it properly and send you a quote through our board-level soldering service before any extra work, with what you’ve already paid credited against it.
How long does the repair take?
2–3 working days on the bench is typical, plus tracked postage each way. The postal address is emailed as soon as you book, and the console is posted back tracked and free as soon as the balance is settled.
Is my data and are my games safe?
Yes. An HDMI port replacement is purely board-level work at the video output. We never touch the storage, so your installed games, saves and account stay exactly as you sent them. There’s no need to sign out or give us any account details, and cloud saves cover you regardless.
A previous repair attempt tore the pads. Can you still fix it?
Usually, yes, and we see this a lot. Torn pads and lifted traces from a DIY or bargain repair attempt can be rebuilt under the microscope with jumper wire and pad repair techniques. It takes longer than a clean swap, so it’s photographed and quoted before any chargeable work, typically an extra £20 on top of the flat price. If you’d rather not proceed we return the console and only the deposit is used, which covers the return postage.
Is an Xbox One still worth repairing at £40?
Honest answer: for an Xbox One S or One X, almost always, £40 is well under what a good used replacement costs and you keep your own console and library setup. For a launch 2013 Xbox One it’s closer, because used prices are low. If the console is otherwise healthy and you want to keep it, £40 is still cheaper than replacing it, but if we think a repair isn’t worth your money we’ll say so before you commit beyond the deposit.
How should I pack the console for posting?
A sturdy box with the console wrapped in bubble wrap and padding on all sides, the original box inside another box is ideal. Take any disc out of the drive first, and keep your controllers, cables and stands at home, we only need the console itself. We email you the postal address as soon as you book, so all you need is a box and a tracked postage service.

What causes Xbox HDMI ports to fail
The HDMI port sits at the edge of the motherboard and takes the full mechanical load of the cable every time it is plugged in or removed. The surface-mount solder joints crack over time, or a cable pulled at a sharp angle can do it in a single event. The usual signs are no picture, a flickering or scrambled image, or a port that feels physically loose when the cable is seated.
Can you fix it yourself?
Technically yes — but it requires hot air rework equipment and magnification to remove the old port cleanly without lifting copper pads. One slipped nozzle and a straightforward repair becomes a board write-off. If you have rework experience, go for it. If not, the professional repair cost is lower than the risk of making it significantly worse.
Repair or replace?
A Series X in working order sells second-hand for £350 or more. The HDMI repair is £45 all-in. If the rest of the console is healthy — no overheating shutdowns, no power faults, no disc drive problems — fixing the port is almost always the better call economically.
