JP-8000 low output: the original enquiry
The owner got in touch about a Roland JP-8000 (JP8000) with an output fault and two SMD capacitors they wanted replaced. They sent photographs of the boards inside the synthesiser, then removed and posted the main board and output board to us for the work.
We agreed the scope before the boards arrived. With the instrument staying with its owner, we could inspect and repair the boards, but the final audio and memory checks would need to happen after refitting.
C219 leakage and a tired backup battery
C219 showed signs of leakage, with tarnishing around its contacts. We recommended replacing it along with the adjacent C217, cleaning the affected area and renewing the solder.
The output board had no visibly bulging or leaking capacitors, and the capacitors checked measured satisfactorily. Several solder joints needed attention, so the work here focused on the jack connections and contact cleaning. The backup battery measured 2.8V, and replacement was included in the agreed repair.
Careful work on both boards
Once the owner approved the assessment, we completed the following board-level repair work:
- Replaced C217 and C219
Renewed the two identified SMD electrolytic capacitors as a targeted capacitor replacement. - Cleaned the affected area
Removed leaked residue and contaminated solder, cleaned the contacts and renewed the solder. - Serviced the output connections
Cleaned the audio jack contacts and reflowed the relevant jack and connector joints. - Replaced the backup battery
Fitted a fresh CR2032 before returning the boards.
The result, confirmed after refitting
After the boards were returned and reinstalled, the owner emailed to confirm the outcome:

The owner also mentioned an initially unseated ribbon connector, resolved during reassembly. With that connected, they reported normal output levels and restored memory, completing the checks that could only be made in the assembled instrument.

Questions about JP-8000 output faults
Does low output always mean failed capacitors?
This case does not establish a single cause for every JP-8000 output fault. We found signs of leakage at C219 and completed capacitor, connection and battery work. The owner then confirmed the result in the assembled synthesiser. Your board needs its own assessment.
Was this a full JP-8000 recap?
No. We replaced C217 and C219. The output-board capacitors we checked measured satisfactorily, so the work there focused on solder joints and jack contacts.
Can I send just the boards for repair?
