FAQ

Why is my Steam Deck fan so loud?

Two main reasons: thermal paste degradation and dust. The factory paste on the AMD APU dries out over 18–24 months and stops conducting heat efficiently, so the fan has to spin faster to compensate. At the same time, dust builds up in the heatsink fins. A full strip-down, ultrasonic clean, fresh thermal paste (or PTM7950 phase-change pad) and new thermal pads usually drops fan noise dramatically and resolves throttling.

My Steam Deck fan is grinding or whining — is it the bearing?

Probably yes. A high-pitched whine, grinding or rattling at idle is the bearing tell-tale. Our £59 flat service includes the replacement fan, internal clean, fresh thermal paste, load testing and tracked UK return.

Does opening my Steam Deck void the warranty?

Steam Deck comes with a 1-year manufacturer warranty from Valve. If yours is still within warranty, we’d recommend contacting Valve support first — they’re usually decent about thermal issues if you make the case. Out-of-warranty Decks (most original LCD models from 2022) have nothing to void; the case is designed to be opened and Valve publishes the service manual on iFixit themselves.

What paste and pads do you use?

For the APU we use Honeywell PTM7950 phase-change pad as the default (it doesn’t pump out, so it lasts 5+ years on a Steam Deck) or Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut / Arctic MX-6 if you prefer traditional paste. For thermal pads we use sized Gelid Extreme pads on the VRM, memory and shielding — measured per surface to the right thickness, not generic stick-on filler.

How long will the repair last?

With PTM7950 phase-change pad on the APU and proper pads on the rest of the board you can reasonably expect 5+ years before another repaste is needed. With premium paste like Kryonaut, expect 3–4 years. Either approach is significantly longer than the factory paste, which starts dropping off around 18 months.

What’s the turnaround?

Most Steam Decks are diagnosed, serviced and posted back inside 5–7 working days. We bench-test under sustained game load (typically a CPU+GPU stress run for 30+ minutes) to confirm temperatures and fan noise have dropped before signing off. Tracked return delivery throughout.

Is there a Steam Deck repair shop near me?

Independent Steam Deck repair shops are rare outside London. Our workshop is in Basingstoke (Hampshire) and we accept Decks from anywhere in the UK by post or courier — most customers send theirs in tracked, we diagnose and quote, and return them tracked once the work is done. So “near me” usually means “a UK mail-in workshop that knows the platform”, and that’s us.
