Won't read discs, grinds on insertion or refuses to eject? Board-level fix or full drive swap with re-pairing.
The PS5 disc drive is one of Sony's more frustrating designs. The drive is electronically paired to the motherboard at the factory, so a simple swap from a donor console doesn't work — the new drive will refuse to spin up until the encryption key from the original drive's controller is rewritten to match.
We diagnose the actual fault first. Often it's a worn laser, a snapped drive belt or a failed motor driver — none of which require touching the pairing. When a full drive swap is the only option, we transfer the original controller PCB or rewrite the keys directly so the disc drive talks to your motherboard again.
Most shops refuse PS5 drive swaps because of the pairing lock. We rewrite or transfer the keys so a donor drive works on your console.
If it's just a laser or belt, we don't sell you a whole drive. You only pay for what's actually broken.
Lasers, belts and controller PCBs are charged at our supplier cost. You see the invoice with the quote.

Three usual culprits. The laser diode degrades with use and stops focussing — discs spin then get spat out. The drive belt stretches and the eject motor slips, so loading misfires. Or the motor driver IC on the drive's controller PCB fails, killing spin entirely. Diagnosis tells us which; the fix and price differ significantly between them.
Not directly. Each PS5 disc drive is encrypted-paired to the motherboard it left the factory with. Drop a donor drive in and it'll sit there doing nothing. We either transfer the original controller PCB onto the donor mechanism, or rewrite the encryption keys so the new drive matches your console's CPU.
From £60 for a clean laser or belt repair. A full drive replacement with re-pairing is typically £100–£140 depending on whether we can reuse your original controller. Free photo quote — pricing is confirmed once we've opened the console and confirmed the failure mode.
No. The SSD is never touched. All saves, installed games and account data stay intact. Disc-drive repair is mechanically separate from storage.
Yes. We open the drive cleanly and recover the disc by hand. Don't shake the console, don't keep pressing eject, and don't push anything into the slot — that's how you scratch the disc and snap the loading arms.
If the console boots fine, plays digital games and the drive symptoms only appear with discs, it's hardware. Firmware-related disc faults are rare and usually fix themselves with a system update. We test on current firmware before quoting.
Yes. 90 days on the specific work performed. If the same fault returns within that window, we redo the repair at no labour charge — you only pay return postage.
