Most laptops slow down the same way: dust slowly clogs the fans and heatsinks, the thermal paste between the CPU and its cooler dries out, and Windows accumulates startup junk. The hardware throttles to protect itself, the fans scream trying to keep up, and what was once a fast machine feels old.

The fix isn't a new laptop — it's a proper clean and re-paste. We strip it down, dust out the cooling system, replace tired thermal paste with high-performance compound, clean the keyboard and chassis, and run a software cleanup. Most laptops come back 5–25°C cooler under load and dramatically quieter. This page is the long-form scope, pricing breakdown and FAQ — everything you might want to know before booking.

Why Hark Tech

One price, no surprises

£45 covers the whole job. £15 to book, £30 once you've seen the before/after temperature report. No upsells, no “we found something else” tactics.

Premium thermal paste, not the cheap stuff

We use Arctic MX-6 or Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut as standard. Better cooling than the OEM grey paste your laptop shipped with, and it lasts years rather than months.

Free UK shipping — both ways

Your £15 deposit covers a tracked Royal Mail label we email to you. Return shipping is on us. You never pay for postage as a separate line item.

What we do, step by step

What’s included in £45

How it works, in detail

  1. Book online. Fill in the booking form on the main service page and pay the £15 deposit by card. Takes about a minute.
  2. We email your shipping label. Within 24 hours you’ll get a tracked Royal Mail label by email. Print it, attach it to your parcel, drop it at any Post Office — no postage to pay at the counter.
  3. Pack it sensibly. Wrap the laptop in bubble wrap or a padded sleeve. Box it with 3–5 cm of padding on every side. We photograph condition on arrival.
  4. We do the work. Strip-down, clean, re-paste, software pass, before/after temperature test. Usually 2–3 working days from arrival.
  5. Pay the £30 balance. We email a Stripe invoice for the £45 service fee minus your £15 deposit. Pay by card from any device.
  6. It comes back tracked. Once the balance clears, your laptop ships back via tracked courier in secure packaging. Free of charge.

Pricing breakdown

Same £45 whether your laptop is a 2018 Dell or a 2024 ROG. Premium thermal paste, written temperature report and 30-day workmanship guarantee included.

Refund policy: If you don’t ship within 14 days of receiving your label, the deposit is forfeit (we’ve already paid for it). If we receive your laptop and decide we can’t help — for example because the issue is outside the scope of a clean and tune-up — we refund the £15 in full and return the laptop at our cost.

If we find another fault: We email you with photos and an honest opinion before doing anything chargeable. You decide whether to add it on (at our normal repair rates) or just have the laptop returned after the clean.

Full FAQ

What’s actually included in the £45?

Full internal dust-out (fans, heatsinks, vents), premium thermal paste replacement on CPU and GPU, external clean of chassis/screen/keyboard, software cleanup with startup optimisation, and a written system health and temperature report. Free UK return shipping is included in that price.

How does the £15 deposit work?

You pay £15 to confirm your booking. We use that to buy a tracked Royal Mail inbound shipping label and email it within 24 hours so you can post your laptop in for free. Once we’ve finished the work, we send a Stripe invoice for the £30 balance. Once paid, your laptop ships back via tracked courier.

Is the deposit refundable?

If you don’t ship your laptop within 14 days of getting your label, the deposit is forfeit (we’ve already paid for the label). If we receive your laptop and decide we can’t help — for example because the issue is outside the scope of a clean and tune-up — we refund the £15 in full and return the laptop at our cost.

Will my data be safe?

Yes. The clean and tune-up doesn’t touch your storage drive — files, settings and installed software are unaffected. We always recommend a backup before posting any laptop in, just as basic good practice.

How long does it take?

Typical turnaround is 2–3 working days from when your laptop arrives at the workshop. Add Royal Mail Tracked 48 transit time both ways and you’re usually looking at a week from booking to it being back in your hands.

Will it actually make a difference?

On most laptops more than 18 months old, yes — visibly. Old thermal paste dries out and clogged fans choke airflow, so the CPU runs hot, throttles, and the fans scream. A proper dust-out and re-paste typically drops idle temps by 5–15°C and full-load temps by 10–25°C. You feel that as quieter fans, fewer stutters and longer battery life.

What if you find something else wrong?

We’ll email you with photos and an honest opinion before doing anything chargeable. If it’s a swollen battery, a cracked hinge or a failing drive, you decide whether to add it on (at our normal repair rates) or just have the laptop returned after the clean.
